The Difference Between a Reward and a Bribe
This is one of the most common questions we get from parents starting behavior support, and it usually comes with some guilt attached. "Am I bribing my child by giving them something for good behavior?" The short answer is that it depends entirely on timing, not on the item itself.
A bribe happens during the behavior you are trying to stop. Your child is in the middle of a meltdown at the store, and you offer candy to make it stop right now. That teaches the child that escalating leads to a reward because the reward appeared specifically to end the escalation.
A reward happens after the behavior you actually wanted, and ideally it is planned in advance rather than improvised in the moment. If you tell your child before you walk into the store, "If we get through the whole trip calmly, we'll pick out a treat at the end," that is a reward for behavior you defined ahead of time and delivered afterward.
Same item. Completely different lesson. The difference is all about when it is introduced.
This is the entire logic behind a token system, and it is why token charts often work better than in-the-moment bargaining. A token chart lets you define the target behavior in advance, allows your child to earn small, visible markers throughout the day or during a task, and exchange those tokens for a reward at a predictable time. Nothing about it depends on a parent negotiating in real time during an escalation.
A few guardrails help keep this system effective. Decide on the target behavior and the reward before the task begins, not during it. Keep the reward small and specific at first. Novelty often matters more than size. Deliver the reward every time the target behavior occurs because consistency is what builds trust in the system. And avoid renegotiating during a meltdown. If a reward is offered to stop an escalation, it shifts from being a planned reward to becoming a bribe.
