First, Then, Not If, Then

First-then boards sometimes get dismissed as a bribery chart, a picture of broccoli next to a picture of an iPad. That framing misses what the tool is actually designed to do. A first-then board is not a bribe. It is a flexibility tool, and the difference comes down to one small word.

"If-then" makes the second activity conditional and uncertain. "If you finish your homework, then you can play." That wording puts the child in a position of proving themselves before they get something they want. For children who already struggle with trust during unpredictable moments, that uncertainty can raise the stakes of the entire interaction.

"First-then" removes that uncertainty. "First homework, then play." Both things are already going to happen. The board is not asking the child to earn the second activity through good behavior. Instead, it shows the order in which two activities they are already going to do will happen. That distinction may sound small, but it can change how a child experiences the request.

A first-then board works best when it is visual, not just spoken. Two boxes side by side, labeled "First" and "Then," each with a picture or icon representing the activity. Point to the board before you begin the first task, and leave it visible the entire time, not just at the beginning.

Keep the "Then" activity genuinely appealing and genuinely guaranteed. If the "Then" activity keeps getting delayed or changed, the board quickly loses its value. A child who learns that "Then" does not really mean then will stop trusting the board.

This tool is especially helpful for the tasks your child avoids the most, not the ones they only mildly dislike. The greater the challenge, the more a first-then board can help because it removes the need for your child to trust an unclear promise. They can see it instead.
